The Sandman Is Coming To TV

The critically-acclaimed comic book series The Sandman is currently in the pre-production stage of development for adaptation into a television series.

Widely regarded as a comic for intellectuals, the 90s title—published mainly by DC Comics—revolves around Dream (also known as Morpheus), The Lord of the Dreaming. The protagonist is the personification of the nature and mystery of dreams whose story begins by his  breaking away from and seeking revenge on his captors.

The comic began as an exploration of the human psyche before delving into fantasy and, eventually, mythology. What really stands out about the comic? Women made up half of the readership, comprised mostly of 20-year olds who read no other comics. Even stranger is that by the end of the comic’s run, it was selling more copies than Superman titles.

Of course, it remains to be seen how much of the original story arcs will remain intact. Will producers stick to psychological themes in the first season and then take the show to the fantasy level in season 2 (assuming there is a Season 2)?

Before those questions get answered, the show needs a network. So far, the comic-turned-telecast is headed for the CW under the direction of Eric Kripke, who’s creatively responsible for the CW show, Supernatural.

Looks like we’ll have to keep waiting for someone to make an adaptation of the Black Panther comic.
