Los Angeles Laker and NBA champion Ron Artest has decided to do the unthinkable. A few months after winning the ring he wanted so bad he reportedly went into Kobe Bryant‘s shower to ask for a chance to join the Lakers, MC Ron is giving up the bling.

Artest, who infamously thanked his therapist after helping to carry his team to victory, has decided to donate the proceeds generated from selling the iconic jewelry—which he will receive on October 26 at a pre-game ceremony before facing his former team, the Houston Rockets—to a cause very close to his heart.

He plans to use the money to help put more psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists in schools. This should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed Artest’s career, as he is a spokesperson for mental-health awareness.

The consistently unique player has said he never intended to actually wear the ring. Say what you want to say about Ron and all of the antics we’ve come to know him for, but he has a firm grasp of a concept more athletes, professionals, and citizens need to develop: selflessness.

Here’s a man who fought fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills, battled back to his sport after a year-long suspension, fought the pre-judgements of players and fans alike, and finally got to the ultimate goal of any professional athlete. Having reached that goal, he now looks to give so that others may receive the same help he has needed over the course of his lifetime.

This type of dedication and willingness to be a part of something bigger than one’s self is the true definition of a champion, and all others in the league would do well to follow his example.

Artests’s gesture may be indicative of something else as well. Maybe he’s so confident the Lakers can win another one, it’s not such a big deal to give this one up.
