What’s Your Favorite Tupac Song?
Today we mourn the loss of Tupac Shakur, taken way too soon at the age of 25 as a victim of street violence in 1996. While the story behind ‘Pac’s untimely death will forever be shrouded in controversy, today we reflect on the legacy of a young visionary who became a booming voice for his generation and tireless advocate for those in urban communities who never had representation before.
Being the diehard ‘Pac fan I am, it’s difficult for me to choose one favorite song. I could dedicate this entire article to breaking down each and every track. “Brenda’s Got A Baby” and “Dear Mama” are songs to throw on when I’m in an introspective, world-on-my-shoulders mood (which is often). And when “Thug Passion” comes on my iPod, I can’t resist the urge to move my body. But if I have to choose one, it would probably be 1993′s “Keep Ya Head Up.” From the classic sample (The Five Stairsteps‘ “Ooh Child”) and raw, heartfelt subject matter to ‘Pac’s emergence as a natural spokesperson for his people, it showcases the artist at his best.

“So much Pain” – just hearing the beginning female vocals and beat to this track brings back beloved ‘Above the Rim’ memories!
