Are You Ready For My Generation?
Television network ABC is set to launch its new mockumentary comedy/drama series. Entitled My Generation, the series will follow a group of high-school graduates from the class of 2000 and catch up with them 10 years later. The show will feature typecast characters such as The Overachiever, the Rich Kid, the Brain, the Jock, etc. in a scripted series reminiscent of the reality show, High School Reunion.
As we all know by now (or will learn in time), life doesn’t always go according to plan. With an ensemble cast and tons of relevant events and fads from the last 10 years to build upon, initial interest looks good for this one.
However, will this be the tried and not-so-true formula of old romances rekindling and victims of bullying coming back for revenge? The real magic on television usually happens when people take familiar, mundane stories and put impressively innovative spins on them in a way that gives us just enough fantasy to be entertaining, but enough reality to make us realize things we’d never before considered.
The show was originally titled Generation Y and if that’s indicative of the subject matter, here’s hoping ABC will go deeper than the surface. It would be nice to see a cast that truly works well together with stories that are well intertwined (a la Crash, the film, not the TV show).
To add another twist to the generation-themed series, ABC is looking to fuse technology and television to reach those who’d likely identify with the characters. There’s a My Generation iPad app which will use the microphone to pick up sounds from the show as you watch. Those sounds will retrieve interactive data such as quizzes, facts, and polls for viewers to use as they watch the show.
Here’s hoping that ABC gets this one right. We have a feeling, however, that Apple will be happy either way.
The series premiere of My Generation is scheduled to air on ABC this Thursday at 8 pm EST.
