And The Winner Of Our LaurelLuxe Giveaway Is…
UPDATE: The winner of this giveaway is: reva skie.
I had the pleasure of attending the LaureLuxe fashion show during the most recent Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, where the runway was taken over by men’s and women’s handmade hoodies, suspenders, dresses, halter tops, shoulder pieces—all made from eco-friendly recycled aluminum plating and chains. The line also includes unique earrings, bracelets and rings. The earrings in particular pay homage to founder Laurel DeWitt‘s hometown of Brooklyn, with each style named after a different street in the borough.
The LaureLuxe look is striking, edgy, innovative. Our videographer, Andrew, accompanied me to the LaureLuxe’s new home—the Heaven Sent showroom—where we previewed the collection and interviewed the talented lady behind the brand.

Kiki: How did you get started with LaureLuxe?
Laurel: “It all started with a class I took at Pratt Art Institute entitled “Wearable Art.” One of our assignments was to make a garment from found objects, which costs nothing to make. So when I told my father about the assignment, he sent me aluminum metal scraps from his company that makes high-end lighting. From there, I created a metal bra and the reaction was very positive. So I continued building my craft from there.”

Since you launched your brand, what was the most prominent placement you received?
“My biggest placement was a Harper’s Bazaar fashion spread with actress, Milla Jovovich. I was in L.A. participating in the Grammy Awards Gifting Suites and a stylist from NYC emailed me to get some pieces for their armor-inspired shoot. She came to my hotel room and pulled some pieces, including the Fatima Shoulder piece that was used in the double-page spread.”
It must have also been exciting to get Nicki Minaj in LaureLuxe. How did that come about?
I actually met the casting director for BET’s Rip The Runway at my first New York Fashion Week show. There was a huge blizzard, two feet of snow and transit was suspended, but she was part of the unbelievable turnout at my show. She prominently placed LaureLuxe all over Rip The Runway. Nicki wore one of my shoulder pieces in the opening of the show.
Did your family and friends support you when you announced your bright idea to launch this brand?
“Yes, my family has always supported me being an artist and gave me the tools I needed to develop my craft. Once I started the line, friends were always there to support and assist me through the various shows, events, and day-to-day business.”
What has been your biggest challenge with the business?
“Managing my personal time is a huge challenge for me. Ninety-five percent of my time is spent working with little sleep. Also, what people don’t understand is when you own a business, the majority of the money you make goes right back into your business so, of course, that’s a struggle!”
What was your most satisfying moment so far, as an entrepreneur?
“My spring 2011 fashion show at The Gates, NYC. I couldn’t imagine receiving a better response. I had some of the industry’s top stylists from L.A. and NYC there supporting the brand and, in that moment, all of my hard work was rewarded. Then just when I thought things couldn’t possibly get better, I was honored by Grey Goose as a 2010 ‘Rising Icon.’ September was a good month!”
What can we expect in the future from LaureLuxe? Any exciting news or collaborations in the works?
“LaureLuxe is now housed in the Heaven Sent showroom, which will significantly drive sales. I’m also starting a line of pink chain bracelets in support of breast cancer awareness. All proceeds will be donated towards the cause.”
If you could pick any one person to rock a LaureLuxe piece, who would it be?
“I would LOVE to dress Beyoncé. I think she is such a sexy fashion diva. I think Sasha Fierce would especially love it! (laughs)”
