It’s almost the end of October, which means Halloween’s right around the corner. Since ancient Celtic times, older people and young kids alike have celebrated the festive day with occult-inspired imagery, including themes of death, evil, magic and mythical monsters. From trick or treating to Halloween parties and scary-movie marathons on TV, there are many ways to enjoy Halloween.

In honor of the most ghoulish date of the year, here are our top five must-see horror movies. Whether these flicks changed the horror movie world or simply scared us silly, these are films you’ve got to check out:

The Exorcist

After seeing the re-issue of the movie, I couldn’t sleep for a week.

Paranormal Activity

This is the reason I believe in ghosts.

The Shining

Here’s Johnny!

I couldn’t go to the circus or be around any clowns after I saw It.

The costume the killer wore was enough to keep me frightened, even when I saw my friends wearing the same costume the following Halloween.

What is your favorite scary movie?
