Can Paranormal Activity 2 Outdo The Original?

This weekend, Paranormal Activity 2 will hit the theaters looking to reclaim the success the original had when it blindsided moviegoers last year. But can the homemade-video styled flick entertain in a similar manner now that the gimmick has been used up? We’re thankful the minds behind last year’s sleeper hit were smart enough not to go the Blair Witch Project sequel route because we all know how piss poor that was. Instead, Oren Peli decided to stick with what worked—now we have a second go around where another family is being haunted by God knows what.

Ultimately, it will all depend on the execution now that we know most of the tricks Peli used in the first film. Somehow, the sequel’s going to have to find a way to make the haunting concept fresh to keep viewers from groaning. It’s a tough task I hope they’ll live up to it. Besides, we need another Halloween movie to see aside from that damned Saw series.

A surprise box-office smash can only catch you off guard once—twice is a bit of a stretch. But as long as the premise of the film manages to keep us on the edge of our seats, we won’t care. We just want to have that hot girl/guy jump into our arms when something scary happens. Hopefully Paranormal Activity 2 can achieve that for us.
