Quincy Jones Denies Dissing Kanye
Quincy Jones is doing damage control after referring to Kanye West as “just a rapper” in a recent interview with USMagazine.com during which he was asked about similarities between himself and the controversial hip-hop star. The legendary producer said:
“Did he write for a symphony orchestra? Does he write for a jazz orchestra? Come on, man. He’s just a rapper. There’s no comparison. I’m not putting him down or making a judgment or anything, but we come from two different sides of the planet. I spent 28 years learning my first skill. I don’t rap. It’s not the same thing. A producer has to have some sort of skills that enable him to be a producer. It’s totally different to know what to do with 16 woodwinds you know from piccolos down to bass clarinet. It’s a whole different mindset. No comparison. None.”
When asked what he thought about the “Power” rapper, Q said:
“I don’t think about him much. He’s a great rapper, but there are a lot of good rappers.”
Is it me, or is Q getting a little ornery in his old age? Anyway, although no one can blame ‘Ye for taking offense, Q is now attempting to downplay his comments by using the standard “out of context” defense. Via a post on his website, the man behind pop-culture juggernaut Thriller said:
“I’d appreciate it if people didn’t take my comments about Kanye West (@KanyeWest ) or anyone else for that matter out of context to contrive a story. I have nothing but respect for my little brother Kanye and what he has achieved in his young career and I look forward to watching his evolution as an artist.”
I’m not mad at Q for trying to clean up his words considering ‘Ye’s history as a loose cannon. This is the same man who doesn’t think twice about snatching microphones from other celebrities during award shows and calling out the leader of the free world on national television we’re talking about here. Now I’m not saying Q is afraid of ‘Ye, but he sure scares the hell out of me.
