Wow. So after all the outrage displayed by the Monday morning quarterbacks earlier this week (myself included!) over the on-field fight between NFL players Andre Johnson of the Houston Texans and Cortland Finnegan of the Tennessee Titans, neither player got suspended for this week’s NFL schedule. Instead, they were handed $25,000 fines and told not to do it again. By comparison, NFL player James Harrison got hit with a whopping $75K fine earlier this season for a bone-crushing hit he laid on a player and another $25K last week for a seemingly legal hit on the quarterback.

Our theory on why Johnson and Finnegan weren’t suspended for a game and docked pay? The NFL took a look at the game tape and said, “That was it?” Compared to some of the on-field and on-court fights that have taken place in other sports recently, Johnson and Finnegan’s melee was relatively tame. To give you a better idea of what we mean, we rounded up 7 of the craziest fights in recent sports history. Now these provided something to get upset about…

The Participants: Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace vs. Indiana Pacers forward Ron Artest

The Fight: Can you believe it’s been six years since this happened? With under a minute left to go in a relatively meaningless November game, these two squared off after a hard foul. Artest actually walked away to avoid a conflict but was hit by a cup of beer thrown by a fan and eventually made his way into the stands to fight. His teammate Stephen Jackson joined him and another teammate Jermaine O’Neal decked a fan sitting courtside. Ouch.

The Winner: Wallace. Though he didn’t actually fight anyone, he was one of the few participants to avoid any major consequences as a result of the fight. Meanwhile, Jackson and O’Neal were suspended more than a dozen games and Artest was forced to sit out the rest of the season. The entire incident gave the entire NBA a huge black eye.
