Michael Vick Vs. Tom Brady: Who Deserves The NFL’s MVP Award?

With just four weeks remaining in the NFL season—where, oh where, does the time go?—the race for the National Football League’s MVP trophy looks like it’s down to just two competitors: Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. And it’s an unlikely duo for a variety of reasons.

The biggest, of course, is that, just two years ago, Vick was sitting by himself in a prison cell, unsure about whether or not he’d ever play in the NFL again. So the fact he’s even being mentioned as an MVP candidate is surprising. But it’s also surprising because Brady has been overshadowed by fellow AFC quarterback Peyton Manning time and time again over the course of the last decade. But since Manning has struggled so badly to get into a rhythm this season, Brady is getting plenty of much-derserved shine for leading the Pats to a 10-2 record this season.

So, it comes down to these two. But the question remains: Who actually deserves the NFL’s Most Valuable Player trophy this season? To help us make our decision, we broke both players down.

Our case for Michael Vick: Vick has the advantage of having the Hollywood story on his side. Love or hate him, his story is so intriguing that it’s kept his name in the headlines all season long and his progress as a quarterback has been under a microscope as a result of it. He’s shown some real progress, too, and earned the most votes for the Pro Bowl of any player as a result of it.

Since taking over the quarterback position for the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1 of the season when starter Kevin Kolb was injured, Vick has passed for more than 2200 yards, rushed for almost 600 yards and accounted for 21 of the team’s total touchdowns. More importantly, he’s been more like the old Michael Vick on the field, scrambling around and forcing opposing teams to account for him at all times. As a result, he’s got the Eagles in first place heading into Week 14 of the season—a position few analysts thought they’d be in when the season started back in September.

Bottom line: Even if Vick wasn’t making a comeback of epic proportions right now, he’d still be having a stellar MVP-like season. So much of what he does on the field can’t be calculated by stats. So while he’ll surely get a few extra votes because of his back story, that isn’t the only reason he deserves to be in the running for MVP.

Our case for Tom Brady: Brady doesn’t have the Hollywood story Vick has (well, actually, we’re lying—Brady does have the Hollywood story, but it’s not nearly as good as Vick’s right now) but he has managed to do more with less this season.

Despite the fact that the Patriots traded away Brady’s favorite target Randy Moss midway through the season and despite the fact that Brady is now throwing to a no-name cast of characters out on the field (undrafted running back Danny Woodhead!?), He has better stats than Vick (28 touchdowns total and more than 3000 yards passing) and he’s done more with them by leading his team to a better record. At 10-2, the Pats have been the cream of the crop in the AFC and they’ve managed to do it by beating top-notch teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets (who they absolutely creamed on Monday Night Football earlier this week) while doing it.

Bottom line: If Vick wasn’t playing as well as he is this season, Brady would be the runaway selection for the MVP. Even though he’s had better years offensively, he appears to be assuming his role as one of the all-time greats right now by showing that he doesn’t need an All-Pro receiver at the end of every one of his passes or an All-Pro running back to help take the pressure off of him. He might not be the sexy pick this year, but if the MVP was selected off stats alone, he’d get the nod.

And our pick for NFL Most Valuable Player is…(drumroll please) Tom Brrrrr-ady! Shocked? Don’t be. Judging by the way MVPs are typically selected, you shouldn’t be surprised if this is who ends up winning it, either. Last year, Drew Brees had one of the best stories in the NFL when he led the New Orleans Saints to the Super Bowl. The MVP winner? The safe pick Peyton Manning. We see it playing out the same way this season. Though Vick would be an interesting pick—and make for one of the most intriguing sports stories of the year—he hasn’t been the best QB in the NFL this season. That distinction goes to Brady, who will add a second MVP trophy to the mantle this season if he continues his high level of play. Let’s just hope Giselle has started making room for it already.

    yup vick

  • carl jr says:

I dont like tom brady so vick for mvp

  • Christa says:

I think Vick has been the best quarterback this season. Brady is great too but I think Vick deserves it more.

  • The Blunted One says:

It’s gotta be Vick, you have to look at as if you took that player away where would the team be, and the Eagles without Vick would basically look like the Redskins. If Brady wasn’t there, Moss still would be and they’d still at least be in the running, so Vick all the way

  • Mike says:

People who think Vick si betetr aren’t looking at the stats, Vick ahs been good and his story is greta but Tom brady has been a betetr quaterback the entire season compared to the fewer games Vick has played. Look at Brady’s touch down and interception ratio, he also has the highest QB rating and he’s doing this all with less helpt han Vick has, also the patriots defense is yougn and isn’t as good as Vick’s yet Brady has led his team to a 10-2 record.

  • TO BE HONESTY WITH YOU I THINK THEY BOTH DO WHY CUZ THEY PLAYED THERE BUTTS OFF FOR IT AND I THINK THEY SHOULD PLAY EACH OTHER EACH TEAM SHOULD AND WHO EVER WIN GETS THE M.V.P. AWARD

  • Donta says:

Vick should receive the mvp simply because his team wasn’t even mentioned for making the playoff before he got the nod and now they are atop there division .The patriots were already ” super bowl contenders” also a lot of his stats came from them running up the score on sub par teams. Any other qb is pulled when they are up by twenty plus points. Or the coach runs the ball to maintain the win. Also how can you say he does more with less when Branch left the team and recieved that big contract that was because of his body of work. He’s a house hold name.

  • Donta says:

Worst case co mvp. It’s scheme(Brady) vs talent (Vick)

  • chester says:

    vick all day bitches

  • Tracey says:

Tom Brady should win, he’s the best QB in the game today and he is carrying his young team to the best record in the NFL.

  • Brett says:

Great! Lets rename it Most Valuable Prisoner. Vick, along with Ray Lewis and many, many others shouldn’t even be in the game. Would you give millions of dollars, freedom, and an honorable trophy to Charles Manson? Sure you would if he played, sellouts. You guys condemn Brett Favre for sending a girl pictures but not these scumbags. He did even commit a felony. Not supporting what he did, just comparing

  • kyle says:

Weellllllll I hate tom brady with an undying passion. Micheal vick, if nothing else is comeback player of the year, and though he doesn’t have a 10Y2 record, the team is 6-1 with vick as starter, had he started all 12 games there’s no doubt in my mind they’d be 10-2 or better, who gives about the stats, but I vote adrian peterson for mvp lol

  • candis kelly says:

i got to go with my boy vick he has made alot of progresss, even though the crazy stuff he went threw my boys back and playin harder .dont hate the player hate the game!!!!!!i got to give it to brady as well hes awesome but my choice is most definitley vick!

  • kerry kelly says:

i love tom brady because hes one of the most smartest qb not to have the greatest receivers on the field, yet they are still good but mr.brady makes them good.he calls 3 plays in the huddle and reads the defense and goes slapping his helmet or making motions to change the plays.hes my pick because hes mature as one of the best qb ever, just like joe montana.TOM BRADY ALL THE WAY!thankyou your favorite fan kerry kelly jacksonville, fla

  • moss says:

moss isn’t even playing with the patriots. he was traded to the vikings and then cut by them and now with the titans, and he barely plays for them. how the heck do you not know that?

dont buy the vick hype, kids. brady is putting up better numbers, by a lot. he’s clearly the MVP unless vick absolutely dominates the last 4 games or brady starts messing up.

  • J Dilla says:

This should be obvious… we’re talking about the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER here… Vick has been tremendous in his starts. Stats don’t determine who’s most valuable, the VALUE of the player to his team does. Vick is clear cut here. Brady has a better O line and a better D on his side… Vick is just Vick, he’s sick. MVP all the way.

  • JSCC says:

It’s without question Tom Brady. New England’s defense is nowhere near as great and talented as Philly’s, neither are their skill players.

Vick is surrounded by electric players. Michael Vick is having an amazing season, but he’s not Tom Brady. Put Tom Brady on that Philly offense and you will have a similar 2007-08 New England Patriots offense.

As for all the comments appealing to things like “Well, I don’t like Tom Brady…”, that’s ridiculous. Stop using your emotions and use your head.

  • blah says:

how can you actually think vick is better than brady? i think everyone just feels bad for him and cant see the truth. he obviously not the better QB this season because the stats and results on the field would show it. btw, didnt vick and the eagles lose to chicago? yeah well brady and the pats just destroyed them…..

  • Dusin1 says:

Neither the Pats or Eagles were even considered contenders at the beginning of the season. But the pats had the lowest rated defense in the league and their offense had no high caliber players after Moss left. Brady has hit on all cylinders and has pulled the New England offense to probably one of the most respected in the league.
    Definitely Brady all the way.

  • Mike says:

Forgot about stats for a moment. They are both putting up similar stats so stop basing in soley on that. Tom Brady has destroyed DESTROYED the top 5 def’s in the league. Do i need to repeat that lol And to those who are saying Vick is more talented are moronic. Vick is a better athelte yes, but hell no is he more talented. Brady is WAY more accurate and arm strange is probably same. WHO PUTS UP 370 YARDS IN A FREAKEN BLIZZARD. Tom Brady is amazing.

  • Mike says:

    Strength**

  • Mike says:

Michael Vick and his entire team cried like freaken babies when he got hit out of bounce (his foot was in bounce btw) and you vick lovers think brady cries!! Brady should get those calls what the hell hes the best QB in football! Does everyone remember him tearing his knee to pieces because of a late hit. Who wouldnt complain. So chill on that front.

  • Keith says:

Tom Brady deserves the MVP award no question.
But it will more than likely go to Vick.
Thats ok. Brady isnt interested in individual awards
he is more interested in team awards like AFC Championships
and SuperBowls. Vick has played great, but Tom Brady is
a great player and is alot better QB than Vick will ever be.
Im hoping that Philly plays New England in the Superbowl.
The Pats will ground the Eagles once again.

  • Dave says:

    This isnt even close.
    TOM BRADY ALL THE WAY!!!!
Vick is a tremendous athlete and he can
    run like hell.
But Brady has proven time and time again
that he can make plays in the clutch.
Brady plays his best when the games matter
the most. That is the QB I want on my team.
Tom Brady is the QB who deserves the MVP award.

  • K-lee says:

Um deffinalty brady. Vick needs to be sacked some more times so he knows how all the puppys felt. Brady is a very skilled and talented qb. go pats<3

  • Sunny James says:

I think both of these quaterbacks are way over rated
