Hot 97′s Cipha Sounds Cracks Joke About Haitian Girls & HIV; Protesters Ask For His Resignation
DJ Cipha Sounds—one half of The Cipha Sounds & Rosenberg Show on NYC’s Hot 97 FM—has the Haitian community in New York calling for his resignation. Last Friday, Cipha made the following on-air statement:
“The reason I’m HIV negative is because I don’t mess with Haitian girls.”
Yeah—so not cute. He immediately recognized his blunder and later took to his Twitter to post the following:
Protesters gathered in front of Hot 97′s offices today, demanding Cipha’s walking papers. For those who’ve never heard the radio show, their comedy is sprinkled with a light dose of Howard Stern–style antics. It’s not uncommon for Cipha to make jokes about his Puerto Rican heritage while Rosenberg quips about being Jewish.
Cipha did offer an on-air apology. Check out the video:
Should Cipha Sounds be fired for his comments?
Being someone of Haitian descent, while I understand the outrage over some of these off-color remarks, the show has been known for this type of comedy. We should be consistent in our criticism of our entertainers. Is it okay to Haitians when people make fun of Mexicans? Is it it okay to Puerto Ricans when people make fun of Jamaicans? Or do we all laugh at the ‘other’ group until we fall into the category?
Don’t be selfish crusaders. Be incensed by the plights of all, not just when your ethnic group comes under fire.
The other part of this is the freedom of speech on the part of all parties involved. As consumers we have the right to protest and boycott as we see fit. But as a radio host, Cipha enjoys rights protected by the United States Constitution to make the jokes, no matter how incorrect or insensitive.
Cipha should have used better judgement in this case and I believe his apology to be sincere. Far be it for me to take food out of his mouth because I was offended for a day based on what he’s done his whole career. Get a thick skin, get a bull horn, or change the station.

i guess then it defeats the prupose of all the Haitians who marched on April 20, 1990 for them blaming Haitians bringing aids in the US???
As a Haitian man with pride, this been going on for too long. This is about race ethnic color,this been going on since the 80′s i mean even the U.S government put the aids shit on the Haitian so its OK for every one to say shit about us…
I heard this news. Don’t be upset by HIV. A most active people on a HIV dating and community site HIVromances.com (whether I spell the site correctly) said “The more we learn about something like HIV and AIDS, the closer we get to finding a cure, even if we see how much we will have to endure to win that race.”

I love how Haitian groups get together for this and not to get some money to help their country if its still there.
