Yele Haiti’s Credibility Still In Question
Allegations of misuse of funds by Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti Foundation continue to dog the former Fugees frontman. According to the NY Post, Zakiya Khatou-Chevassus, an employee of Yele who was ‘Clef’s rumored jump-off, was given a huge pay increase in the months prior to the massive earthquake that struck Haiti last January:
“Zakiya Khatou-Chevassus was paid $147,000 last year, a $42,000 bump from 2008, according to documents obtained by The Post. That’s nearly $15,000 more than the charity’s president, Hugh Locke.
Khatou-Chevassus was also promoted from a consultant to the agency’s vice president.”
Questions surrounding how money donated to Yele is appropriated first arose early last year. By ‘Clef’s own admission, several thousand dollars was shelled out by Yele to companies run by the “Gone Til November” rapper and his partners. Now this is usually where I add my two cents with some smart-ass comment, but I’ll hold off on passing judgment since I’m trying to give ‘Clef the benefit of the doubt.
