Will The Kennedys Ever Air On TV?
One of the foremost families of American royalty (and, unfortunately, multiple tragedies) is all set to debut on the small screen. The Kennedys, an eight-part miniseries developed by and scheduled to air on the History Channel, is all about late President John F. Kennedy, his wife Jackie, brother Robert, and their father, Joseph Kennedy, Sr.
However, the History Channel has chosen to pull the plug on the very expensive project (to the tune of $25 million) which stars Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes, among others in an all-star cast. In a statement, the History Channel leadership notes the series is not for them.
“Upon completion of the production of The Kennedys, History has decided not to air the 8-part miniseries on the network. While the film is produced and acted with the highest quality, after viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”
We could’ve told them that. When people think of the History Channel, they think documentaries, biographical sketches, and such. They don’t think miniseries presentations or films.
Since the announcement from the big H, there’s been much speculation as to why the series was shelved. One theory suggests Caroline Kennedy, daughter of late former first lady Jackie O., had a role to play in the shelving of the series. She is writing a book on her mother which is published through a subsidiary of Disney, which partially owns A&E and thus is part owner of the History Channel.
Furthermore, First Lady of California Maria Shriver has expressed her dissatisfaction with the series to NBC, which is also a stakeholder in A&E.
The show has been refused by several other networks in the past few days, including Showtime and FX. Who knew that either of these networks had standards? Seriously, remember Nip/Tuck?
Regardless of the tragedies they’ve faced, the Kennedys are still a force in this country. With ties to the large networks, they can ensure the family is only portrayed in the most positive light.
Of course, this leads us to wonder what content the family had issues with and why. If there’s one thing we know, it’s that nothing hurts quite like the truth (and nothing sells quite like that which is controversial). We’d have to guess that some type of Marilyn Monroe love scene or story arc has them upset or maybe the picture above is suggesting something (read: love triangle)?
We want to see just what was worth all the trouble of pulling so many strings. It is rumored DirecTV may buy the show and air it. Has no one contacted Bravo or E!? By the looks of it, they’ll air just about anything. What about OWN?
Finally, we have to ask: If no one picks the show up stateside, how in the world is Katie Holmes going to contribute anything to the household? Shout-out to Tom Cruise for holding it down.
While pondering that last question, check out the trailer of the show we may never see (until it hits the Internet and is sold at your local barber shop, beauty salon, or gas station, of course). There’s always BET for The Obamas when it’s their turn in Hollywood.
