Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y Meet In NFL Showdown

The battle for supremacy playing out this Sunday in the AFC Championship game between the New York Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers isn’t confined to Heinz Field alone. Both teams have unofficial spokespeople in Curren$y (the Jets) and Wiz Khalifa (the Steelers), two artists with a friendly yet competitive relationship of their own.

The colorful rappers’ mutual “botanist” stance solidified their bond, resulting in joint (get it?) mixtapes like 2009′s oft-downloaded How Fly. They’ve also collaborated on more recent tracks, like last year’s “Huey Newton.” They chat frequently on Twitter (to the delight of their increasing number of fans) and enjoy a similar career status, with Complex including both artists in their most anticipated albums of 2011 list.

Their healthy rivalry has been kicked up a notch by the resounding success of Wiz’s signature hit, “Black & Yellow.” The song (remixed numerous times including the recent “G-Mix” with Snoop Dogg, T-Pain and Juicy J) has become the Steelers’ new, unofficial anthem. The song’s video has clocked a mind-boggling 24 million views—with an average of 350,000 new views per day in the past month or so—inspiring others to make versions for their home teams.

While Wiz has the ‘Burgh on lock, Curren$y’s “JET Life” movement often uses New York Jets’ memorabilia for branding, even though the artist himself was born in New Orleans. Standing for Just Enjoy This Sh*t, the campaign includes its own burgeoning clothing line, JETS International.

Fans of both artists incessantly engage in online debates about the superiority of one over the other, with many adamant Wiz’s current success wouldn’t be possible without Curren$y’s initial co-sign. Whatever the case may be, it’ll be interesting to see this healthy rivalry play out this Sunday and beyond.

Make sure you tune into the Steelers vs Jets game at 6:30|5:30c on CBS.
