The Company Men Hits Close To Home

Despite the growing popularity of animated fantasies, sci-fi thrillers, and mushy romantic comedies with their hilariously unrealistic dialogue, sometimes we want films and stories that are closer to our actual lives. Such a film has come along in the form of The Company Men.

The movie focuses on three men who suffer the corporate casualty of downsizing, leaving them frustrated, out of work, and insecure. (For the past three years of this horrific economy, plenty of Americans are able to relate.)

The all-star cast is headed up by Academy Award winners Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris J The Genius Cooper, and Kevin Costner.

Affleck’s character goes from making six figures in a posh office to doing carpentry work with his hard-hat-wearing brother-in-law, played by Costner.

While a happy ending—the likes of which has not been so easy to come by for most who watch the film—will likely follow, the film should still present a solid and thought-provoking look at the American rat race—its triumphs and its defeats.

After all, would you really want to watch this film if the main characters remained broke and hopeless throughout? As the tag line from the trailer poignantly states: “In America, we give our lives to our jobs. This fall, it’s time to take them back.”

The Company Men is now playing in theaters.
