Whipped Lightning: The New Four Loko?

Submitted by on February 9, 2011 – 10:07 am2 Comments

If you’re of legal drinking age, Whipped Lightning may be something fun—especially with Valentine’s Day this week. Described as the “world’s first alcohol-infused whipped cream,” the dairy product that’s best served at room temperature is the latest in a long line of controversial, alcohol-laced concoctions.

Inevitable reports have surfaced, however, declaring Whipped Lightning the newest craze amongst under-age college students, who are topping everything from coffee to Jell-O shots with it. Like its popular predecessor Four Loko, Whipped Lightning apparently gets you “wasted” without even knowing it. It comes in tasty flavors like “Caramel Pecan,” “Tropical Passion,” “White Chocolate Raspberry” and “German Chocolate” and the can get up to 36.5 proof/18 percent alcohol.

Whipped Lightning isn’t available in every state just yet (including the bigger states of California and Florida, interestingly) but its distribution is growing by the month. Since it’s considered more adult beverage than food, it’s not currently regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (the calories aren’t even listed on the cans) or sold in supermarkets.
