Craigslist & The Congressman
And the winner of the “Can’t Watch” BBM Emoticon Award goes to…drum roll please…New York Congressman Chris Lee (R-NY) for sending shirtless pictures in response to an ad on Craigslist asking: Will someone prove to me that not all Craigslist men are toads? Gawker reports Lee identified himself as a divorced lobbyist and a “fit, fun, classy guy.” How prophetic. Soon, he may be both.
In the immortal words of Homer J. Simpson, “Doh!”
The Republican Congressman issued a statement after his resignation saying:
I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents. I deeply and sincerely apologize to them all. I have made profound mistakes and I promise to work as hard as I can to seek forgiveness.
Between the Democrats’ Eliot Spitzer’s pay-as-you-go (for sex) and John Edwards’s Maury moment, to Republicans’ Mark Sanford’s hike (in Argentina) and Larry Craig’s bathroom footsie for boy toys—I don’t know which party is worse. But Americans can be glad that at least political sex scandals have been carried out in a truly bipartisan fashion.
Whether it stems from hubris or a sense of entitlement that comes with public office, or just men being men, watching politicians throw their careers away for some side action is always a slightly humorous, but rather sad, on-screen production. Marital issues are a part of life and although all of the aforementioned scandals were completely avoidable, going through them in front of the nation must be an excruciating process for the spouses and families involved.
With that being said, chuckle, chuckle.
