Why Isn’t Gangsta Boo Mentioned In “Best Of” Female Rap Lists?
There’s been a lot of hoopla about females, or lack there of, in the rap game recently. Right now, everyone’s attention is on Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj‘s feud. Foxy Brown doesn’t get mentioned these days unless it’s a rumor of her wilding out somewhere. Eve was relevant again for a second, but that’s only because of her appearance on Swizz Beatz‘ Monster Monday music tracks. It appears nobody has hope for another female rapper to make noise on the scene besides Minaj, as not too many folks are taking Kim’s comeback serious. But while we all sit and wait for our Black Friday mixtapes and new Young Money mistress music, there’s a rapper working through the femcee drought and her name is Gangsta Boo.
Gangsta Boo is no newcomer to the rap game. Getting her start in the 90s with Memphis rap group Three Six Mafia, she released her first album, Enquiring Minds, back in 1998 after leaving Three Six. Since then she’s kept her name in the game releasing various projects independently. Boo’s currently linked up with Atlanta producer Drumma Boy and signed to his Drum Squad record label. She dropped her Gangsta Grillz mixtape, The Rumors, with DJ Drama in 2009, introducing the world to her Drum Squad sound. More recently she dropped a new tape, Miss.com, with features from Lil’ Wayne, Gucci Mane and more. We’re not sure what 2011 holds for the self-proclaimed queen of Memphis, but if she keeps working at it, I’m sure her name will ring some bells in the game. Take a listen to her latest mixtape efforts below and tell us, should Gangsta Boo be mentioned when female rappers are the topic of discussion? Be sure to check Gangsta Boo on Twitter also!
