Porn Sites Get New .XXX Domain
Score one for the sex industry. According to Mashable:
At a board meeting in Silicon Valley on Friday, ICANN approved a new top-level domain for porn sites. URLs ending in .xxx will contain sexually oriented adult entertainment content that is verified to be neither fraudulent nor illegal.
Since 2003, advocates have been petitioning for the .xxx domain and nearly 230,000 URLs have already been reserved. Reports are that porn site owners won’t have to relinquish their .com or other URLs and .xxx domains won’t be mandatory for sites with adult content.
The ICM Domain Registry says .xxx will “become a trusted brand for porn connoisseurs,” promising Internet porn consumers safety from online fraud and child pornography in addition to more traffic and higher profits.
