First Look: X-Men: First Class

On the heels of the successful spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine, comes a new film in the X-Men universe. This one’s a prequel entitled X-Men: First Class. Set in the 1960s, the film focuses on the relationship between Professor Xavier and Magneto, and how they came to form their respective organizations, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. The film will attempt to accurately portray certain events of the ’60s, such as the presidency of John F. Kennedy, the Civil Rights Movement and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Of course, the two major characters of the film will still be harnessing and developing their mutant powers, struggling with the task of leading other mutants and having each others backs as…friends. Before they became archenemies, Xavier (played by James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) were actually very close friends.

Other notable appearances in the film include Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, leader of the Hellfire Club (the antagonists/villains of the film) and Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvadore, a mutant who is part-insect. Michael Ironside also makes and apprearance.

Special effects, comic book characters, costumes and a blast from the past—this film has it all, including a surprise cameo (which has yet to be revealed)! This certainly seems poised to give Transformers 3 a run for its money as the #1 movie of the summer.

X-Men: First Class will be released to theaters June 3, 2011.
