This weekend featured two pretty shameful performances. Kobe Bryant‘s Lakers took a dive against the Dallas Mavericks in Game Four of the NBA Playoffs and were swept, while Shane Mosley shut down once he figured out that Manny Pacquiao was too strong and too fast for him and lost a pathetic 12-round unanimous decision.

Both of them looked like quitters.

But who is the biggest quitter of them all?

Shane Mosley should have never gotten the fight against Manny Pacquiao. His two performances against Floyd Mayweather (loss) and Sergio Mora (draw) showcased a fighter who was deteriorating as much as most 39-year-olds do. But Mosley would tell anyone within an ear shot that this was going to be a war. Come Saturday night, “The War” could have been called “The Race.” Mosley appeared a little gun shy in the first two rounds, but he would then be hurt and dropped in the third round by Pacquiao and put on his track shoes for the rest of the evening. Mosley’s unwillingness to engage showed a side of the fighter we had never seen before. There were no heated exchanges and no “Sugar” Shane Mosley offensive explosion. What you saw was a man being beaten into submission and had nowhere to go just to quietly retire. He was trapped in that boxing ring and it was either kill or be killed; he chose to run. If you piss Pacquiao off with your performance, you know you really did bad.

The Lakers entered game 4 against the Dallas Mavericks on the wrong side of a 3-0 deficit that shocked the basketball world. Here were the defending national champs losing to a team that they shouldn’t have had a problem with. But alas, some hung on to the hope that the Lakers could comeback put together a history making comeback. Unfortunately, nobody told LA that. The Lakers came out limp and were squashed by the Mavericks in a pitiful performance that looked like a team had ripped out their heart Mortal Kombat style. When the final score showed 122-86, you couldn’t imagine the on court play being worse than what the score showed. It definitely was. As the game progressed, the Lakers on court antics were very similar to Mosley’s performance the night before. The Lakers took a big punch in the mouth in the 2nd quarter and wanted no parts of their opponent for the rest of the night. Unfortunately for them, there’s nowhere to hide. So they let their feelings get the best of them as Odom and Bynum were ejected for silly fouls late in the game and just stunk up the court with lazy defense and poor shooting. It’s not the way you wanted to see Phil Jackson go.
