Young Muslim women who adhere to more strict Islamic tradition continue to push boundaries when it comes to personal style choices.

Das, a high-end fashion label based in Dubai run by gorgeous sisters Hind and Reem Beljafla, puts the abaya front and center as part of its collections. Abayat are most often black and either a large square of fabric draped from the shoulders or head or a long caftan that covers the whole body except the face, feet, and hands.

Hind Beljafla was recently interviewed for a video project by Brownbook (the “urban guide to the Middle East”) and Hypebeast. She talks about the abaya (“to be able to design the abaya, you have to understand it”) and incorporating new elements such as leather, feedback from style icons Christian Louboutin, Tom Ford and Diane von Furstenberg and more.
