Just as we we’re all excited about the world wide release of the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (November 8, 2011), Activision announced a not-so-exciting subscription service. Yes, a subscription service on top of your Xbox LIVE & PSN subscription. PC players can look forward to this additional charge, too. However, don’t panic just yet. You can still play online without the “Elite” subscription.

Black Ops was the best-selling game last year raking in more than $1 billion during the first six weeks. On average there are about 500,000 people playing multiplayer online after work every day. The number grows when there’s a new map pack DLC. There’s no reason why Activision shouldn’t try to capitalize on their growing COD fans. It’s your typical drug dealing strategy; you get your customers hooked, then bump the price due to “quality.”

Let’s look into what you’re getting. The COD Elite service takes hardcore gaming to another level for both Black Ops and the up coming MW3. It’s like Facebook + YouTube + Google Analytics mashed together. It’s a social network that documents your COD career. It records your performance with technical details including information that determines which gun you use best for a particular map. You can save and upload video captures for others to comment on or bash. Big selling point—you can form groups or clans and compete online. This saves you the hassle of organizing clan matches on third party web sites, where the losing team reports a loss out of good will. You’ll be able to access your account from any web browsing device: computer, tablet, iPhone, Android and so on. To top it all off, you can win prizes for playing and maybe even meet your future significant other on there. Biggity bam.

The Call of Duty Elite subscription looks like an amazing social networking service if you’re willing to pay for it, or if you even have to pay for it. It’s still not definite if these features will come with a monthly bill. Stick around for an update. E3 Expo is only a week away!
