Maxwell To Appear On VH1 Storytellers
Back in May, VH1 cameras caught a very spirited, energetic, and jovial performance from R&B crooner Maxwell for VH1 Storytellers.
“Storytellers has been around for 15 years, and it’s been 15 years since I put out my first album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite…You have this dream as a kid, and the next thing you know you’re at VH1 Storytellers and the crowd is singing along to your songs. It’s a blessing,” he said.
Of course, the premise of the show is to tell the stories behind an artist’s most famous or controversial song before, after, or during performing them to give the audience a better appreciation of the music although in recent years, the story telling aspect of the show has somewhat taken a back seat to the performances.
It doesn’t seem that Maxwell will disappoint in either capacity, as he gives us some insight into a few of his hits from his latest album, BLACKsummers’night, including—of course—”Pretty Wings.”
“Sometimes love doesn’t work out, sometimes it’s bad timing, and sometimes you meet a girl who shows you why God created women.”
He later dedicated the song to “all the people who have lost and will find love again.”
Maxwell also got very candid when talking about “Fistful of Tears.”
“This song is inspired by war. I hate that we’re fighting and I can’t wait for the troops to come back…it’s also about trying to express to someone who is so beautiful and amazing and yet they just can’t see that in themselves.”
Toward the end of the 12-song set, he also gets the crowd into the action, calling them on stage to dance with him during “Get To Know Ya” (one of my personal favorites).
His new album, blackSUMMERS’night, is scheduled to be released some time this year.
Be sure to tune in to Maxwell: VH1 Storytellers when it airs Friday, June 17 at 11 PM EST.
