Selena Gomez Talks “Post-Disney Curse”

Modern day pin-up girl Selena Gomez speaks exclusively in the new issue of Billboard magazine (on-sale June 18) about the nerves behind launching her post-Disney career.

The star of Emmy Award–winning Wizards Of Waverly Place, Gomez, 18, is the latest Disney Channel star attempting to step away from a TV character she played for four seasons. Waverly Place wrapped its series finale in May and from that moment on, Gomez began promoting her latest musical effort with gusto (and without the benefit of the Disney machine that built her).

“It’s obviously an important phase in my career, and personally,” says Gomez, whose biggest drawcard right now is arguably her relationship with Justin Bieber. “The good news is I have been juggling acting and singing for two-and-a-half to three years. But I have to start over in some areas. It’s interesting to start taking risks, to grow up through my music.”

Gomez’s chart-ready third album (yes, we had no idea either) When The Sun Goes Down is out on June 28 through Disney-owned Hollywood Records. The label is pulling out all the stops for its release, which is said to be the most important of Gomez’s young career. Big names like Katy Perry have contributed to the song writing process , a 29-city tour is planned for North America plus a significant promotional run for her upcoming film, Monte Carlo (July 1) is in the works.

Her band, Selena Gomez & The Scene, released their debut album Kiss & Tell in September 2009, debuting at number nine on the Billboard Top 200. Kiss & Tell and its follow-up, A Year Without Rain, are both certified gold.
