5 Tech Items Dad Wants For Father’s Day

About a month ago, we told you about the five things your mom wanted you to buy her for Mother’s Day. From an Amazon Kindle to a BlackBerry Curve 3G, we’re sure you’re still sitting in your mom’s good graces if you took our advice and skipped the chocolates and flowers in favor of one of the latest and greatest tech gadgets on the market.

With Father’s Day right around the corner—it’s this Sunday for those of you who don’t own a calendar!—we thought we’d do the same thing for dad, too. Believe it or not, he really doesn’t want another tie, a bottle of cologne, or a 300-pack of golf tees for Father’s Day. What he really wants is something that’ll bring him joy for more than just a day. He wants a cell phone, a digital camera, or something that he can rip out of the box and start playing with for the next 12 months.

So sit back, take out your credit card again (we hope you’ve paid off mom’s gift by now!), and get ready to put a smile on your dad’s face on Sunday. Any one of these gifts is guaranteed to do the trick.

1. GoPro HD Hero ($180; gopro.com)

Forget buying dad another boring point-and-shoot camera. If your pops is even a little bit adventurous, the GoPro HD Hero is a must-have. It straps onto a lot of different surfaces, including handlebars, helmets, and even your own wrists so that you can capture action shots while participating in any number of different activities without having to hold onto the camera the whole time. Um, why did it take so long for someone to come up with this!?

2. Droid Charge By Samsung ($300 with a two-year contract; verizonwireless.com)

We’ve seen our fair share of dads walking around recently with flip phones that look like they were purchased back in 2002. Bring your dad into the present day with Verizon’s fastest 4G phone. It’s got tons of apps, a large touchscreen, and it’s connected to Verizon’s speedy 4G network. Trust us: He won’t miss that old flip phone for a second.

3. AKG Q701BLK Quincy Jones Signature Line Reference-Class Premium Headphones ($299; akg.com)

Is your dad an audiophile? Does he love to hear clean, crisp music when he puts on his headphones? Is he still using those white buds that come with every iPod? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then your dad needs these headphones. Designed by Quincy Jones, they’ll make just about any recording sound like you’re sitting right next to an artist in the studio.

4. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ($499; samsung.com)

The Apple iPad 2 isn’t the only tablet computer worth your money right now. If your dad is more of an Android guy (hey, he’s already getting the Droid Charge, right!?), then this tablet might be for him. It features Android 3.1 Honeycomb, widescreen HD viewing on a giant 10.1-inch screen, Flash (one thing the iPad 2 definitely does not have), and a super thin design. Plus, it’s priced just as low as the iPad 2. Not a bad deal at all.

5. Sony 60″ BRAVIA NX720 Series HDTV ($3149; sonystyle.com)

Want to make sure you’ve got an open invitation anytime you go to visit dad from now on? Put one of these in his entertainment center. It’s got full HD in 1080p, 3D capabilities, built-in WiFi, and—oh yeah—it’s 60 inches! If this doesn’t have your dad bragging about you for the next 12 months, nothing will.
