Hell if I know. Until a week ago, I had never heard of planking and now that I know what it is, I wish I could take back the twenty minutes of my life I wasted watching videos and listening to others discuss the merits of one of the world’s most ridiculous trend. If you, too, find yourself asking, “What is planking?” let me give you a quick rundown. According to Wikipedia:

The lying down game (also known as planking, or face downs) is an activity, popular in various parts of the world, consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body, and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the Internet is an integral part of the game. Players compete to find the most unusual and original location in which to play. The location should also be as public as possible, and as many people as possible should be involved.

Yes, it is as dumb as it sounds but that hasn’t stopped Americans from catching on to this craze. Dwight Howard and Gilbert Arenas, stars of the Orlando Magic have been actively engaged in what can only be described as a “planking war.” I could keep complaining but no one’s listening because they’re all out planking. So in the spirit of “If you can’t beat them, join them” here is my favorite video and photos of the world’s stupidest fad.

Rosario Dawson, Jimmy Kimmel, planking. Now watch.
