Bad Teacher debuted in an impressive second place at the box office last weekend, as Cameron Diaz boozed and cursed her way through homeroom. But would she qualify as the worst teacher on film? We look at some of the other contenders:

Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal: Cate carries on an affair with a student for months; Judi knows about it, but doesn’t report it so she can blackmail Cate into loving her. Must have made for awkward staff meetings.

Everyone in The Faculty: Jon Stewart, Salma Hayek, and Bond-girl Famka Janssen seduce, abuse, and assault their students in this 1998 thriller. But it’s not their fault (spoiler alert); they’re possessed by space aliens.

Ian McKellen in Apt Pupil: McKellen’s character isn’t an actual teacher, but the escaped Nazi war criminal does provide lessons in cruelty to high school valedictorian Brad Renfro.

Alan Rickman in the Harry Potter films: Professor Snape works for the The Dark Lord himself, and tries to destroy HP. ‘Nuff said.

Honorable Mention:

Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad: Recruiting his star student to be a meth cooker, Cranston packs a big-screen amount of evil into his television role as chemistry-teacher-turned-crime-lord Walter White.
