Crayola might rock but he’s not the best person to consult when considering a new hair color. Yet time and time again, artists pick colors straight out of a crayon box.

From lime greens and bubble gum pink, to neon yellow and electric blue, Hollywood starlets Rihanna, Willow Smith, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Joss Stone, Ke$ha and Rachel McAdams have let their hair color border on cartoonish. Perhaps no one has taken the trend to more of an extreme than Nicki Minaj, who often uses wigs to achieve her technicolor hairstyles.

Once only for the most outlandish of divas, even classic beach blonde Lauren Conrad has given in to the rainbow hair trend. She recently tweeted a photo of herself with newly dyed, pink, purple and teal hair tips.

Coloring your ends is ironically “teacher/ bank-teller friendly,” says Kristin Ess, the L.A. colorist behind Lauren’s new color, to Allure. “When Lauren was leaving the day we colored her hair, I asked her put it up in a bun, and you could see no color whatsoever.”

So which of these stars are rainbow bright and which hair colors should be left in the dark?
