Porn Studio Loses Google Lawsuit

A U.S. appeals court has rejected an adult Web site’s claim that Google cost them $50 million in subscriptions. Norm Zada, the founder of Perfect 10, claimed Google violated his copyrights and ruined his business by displaying images from his Web site in search results.

Lots of people sue Google for copyright infringement, but Zada didn’t have a prayer of proving that Google alone was responsible for his millions in losses. Maybe he didn’t notice there are a few other places on the internet to find pictures of naked women without paying for a subscription. And Zada didn’t help his credibility by making similar lawsuits against Amazon and Visa. Besides, what kind of businessman can’t turn a shoutout in Superbad into increased revenue?

However, free material on the Internet (naked and otherwise) is affecting even major companies. Also last week, the CEO of Time Warner Cable blamed falling Video On Demand profits on free online porn. If Time Warner Cable feels the pinch, what chance did Perfect 10 have?

In fact, all of Time Warner’s VOD orders are down, not just adult orders. Cable subscriptions overall are down, too, and while the economy is certainly playing a role, so are Hulu and iTunes. So while Netfilx is pissing people off for now, online entertainment might win out in the long run.
