Stephen Colbert’s Corn Porn

Stephen Colbert has produced a political ad for Iowa that, according to the comedian himself, features “ear-sizzling, hot-buttered, below-the-corn-belt action that appeals to Iowans’ basest kernel instincts.”

Wow. The late-night host produced the video to run ahead of the Iowa Straw Poll, an unofficial primary for Republican presidential candidates. Corn is really important in Iowa, where they grow a lot of it and it makes up a big part of the economy, but I think Colbert may have overestimated the states love (or lust) for the grain.

The ad was produced by Colbert’s SuperPAC (Political Action Committee), which is officially named “Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow.” The group was formed to take advantage of a recent Supreme Court ruling that basically allows corporations and unions to pour massive amounts of money into political campaigns.

Colbert threw his supporters’ funds behind former Texas governor and major Republican candidate Rick Perry… sort of. The video encourages Iowans to write in “Rick Parry,” with an “A for American, A for Iowa.”

In reality, I hope that Colbert was just trying to crash the Iowa Straw Poll, which becomes a major political event in deciding the Republican presidential nominee, despite the fact that it’s basically a $30-a-head, beer-fueled BBQ. (Actually, that doesn’t sound like the worst basis for a democracy.)

Rick Perry ended up with 718 votes (3.6%) at the poll; but according to Colbert, the Iowa Republicans are refusing to tell how many votes were actually for Rick Parry. Considering that Colbert’s fans almost got a space station named after him, I wouldn’t be surprised if they came out behind Parry too.
