Perry Vs. Perry: Why Linda Hates Katy’s Music!
Sheesh Linda Perry, tell ‘em how you really feel.
The 4 Non Blondes frontwoman and legendary songwriter has gone h.a.m. on Katy Perry, submitting her as the part of the reason “the music industry is in turmoil.” According to Perry senior, young Katy “is not giving substance” with her albums.
NME reports Linda’s rampage is focused on the fact she believes Katy’s career is built around hit singles and the other tracks on her album “are going to be crap.”
“I’m not a huge fan of Adele but that’s a solid record and it’s selling. That means people are still buying records. It’s the crappy, like, who wants a Katy Perry record? I’m sorry, but you’re going to get the two songs that are probably the hits that are good, but the rest of the album is going to be crap. It’s going to sound like shit.”

“So people download the single, and that’s it. She’s great for what she does, but she’s not reinventing the wheel, she’s not giving substance, she’s just giving microwave popcorn to feast on right at this moment. She’s not looking to change the world musically, so all the power to her. I’m not saying that’s bad, I’m saying it’s not what I participate in. That’s part of the reason why the music business is in turmoil.”
If it’s one thing Linda knows, it’s the music business. A major songwriter and producer, she founded two record labels, contributed heavily to albums by Courtney Love and Kelly Osbourne, and launched James Blunt‘s career in the U.S. She’s written and produced number one songs for several successful female singers including Christina Aguilera (“Beautiful”) and Pink (“Get the Party Started”).
To be fair, Katy has had songwriting success aside from her own music (where she shares writing credits on hits like “Teenage Dream” and “Firework”), contributing tracks for artists like Kelly Clarkson (“I Do Not Hook Up” and “Long Shot”) and Selena Gomez & The Scene (“Rock God”).
Wow…Exactly how long do you have to be successful in the music industry before you can dole out blame for one person causing turmoil in the entire field?
Just because Stephen King isn’t Shakespeare doesn’t mean that he’s not speaking to people-affecting them.
Katy refuses to be anybody but herself, and her story of struggle and inner strength is apparent on tracks in her album like “Firework”, “Who Am I Living For”, “Pearl”, and “Not Like The Movies”.
I’m assuming you haven’t listened to these songs not on top 40 play since you were making an assumption about the “rest of the record” in your interview.
Don’t put that kind of uninformed, total blame on someone. That kind of scapegoating is reminiscent of an old, fading and bitter bitch that won’t stop complaining and work to be the change they want to see instead of scapegoating a bright ray of sunshine into the downfall of an industry. Why is the headline so misleading? Linda Perry didn’t say she hated her music at all. In fact,she said she’s good for what she does. The point is that she only tries on the singles.

I’m a “child” and I even know who Linda Perry is. She’s a goddess. But seriously, Katy Perry’s music lacks depth. It’s just filler music with a good beat. She can’t even sing without the help of auto tune. Yeah you may be able to pick out a good performance or 2, but her voice is not spectacular by any means. She’s not the only one ruining music, but she’s definitely making an impact

It seems in life, we always accuse the other guy of what we are guilty of ourselves. You notice that Lady Gaga doesn’t criticize other artists. It is simply beneath her. Perhaps, Linda Perry should exercise that same option. Katy Perry is obviously a talented singer and songwriter or she wouldn’t have sold five number one hits off a single album. In fact, many of her lesser songs are the ones that have the the depth of expression that Linda Perry is wishing would exist in music industry. I especially like the song “What am I living for.” It basically summarizes the struggle that Katy Perry is experiencing by being in the public eye. It foretells of the sacrifices that are required by those that are famous and questions the underlying motivation of what (she, the entertainer) should really be seeking in her life. The lyrics are not shallow at all. It dives into deeper issues of personal character and willingness to take a stand for what is right.
