What A Legacy: Steve Jobs Resigns As Apple CEO

Steve Jobs, the man credited with igniting Apple’s omnipresence in the tech market and making them one of the most powerful brands in the world, resigned from the company yesterday.

Here’s the letter the Co-Founder and two-time CEO sent to the board of directors:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Jobs’ health has been an issue for a lengthy period of time and looks to have perhaps finally taken its toll. While his letter didn’t specifically refer to his well being, the 56-year-old has appeared thin and frail since he went on medical leave from the company in January. He officially revealed he had been suffering from pancreatic cancer in August 2004, underwent a liver transplant in 2009 and has been battling various illnesses throughout.

Tim Cook has been installed immediately as the company’s CEO (he instantly sent out a letter to staff, letting them know “Apple is not going to change”) and Jobs will continue on as Chairman of the Board.
