Does Tha Carter IV Show Lil Wayne Has Fallen Off?

While he’s currently sitting pretty at number three on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart (his highest-ever opening rank) with “She Will” (featuring Drake) and his previous single “How To Love” has been applauded for its socially conscious video, it looks like Lil Wayne‘s ninth studio set Tha Carter IV isn’t what hip-hop fans were looking for from the lauded MC.

While the album is set for official release at midnight immediately following the MTV Video Music Awards tomorrow night (where Wayne is scheduled to perform) it leaked online a couple days ago. Fans are waiting to see if Wayne still has the magic touch, ever so slightly comparing his current efforts to the recent critical and commercial success of Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s creative, envelope-pushing Watch The Throne opus.

Tastemaker assessments aside, the album has so far enjoyed chart success: “She Will” is Tha Carter IV‘s fourth single to make the top 100, after “6 Foot, 7 Foot” featuring Cory Gunz, “John” featuring Rick Ross and “How To Love.” Other tracks being touted as “must listen” on the album include “It’s Good,” where Wayne is supposedly going at Jay with lines like, “talk about Baby money, I got your baby money/Kidnap your bitch, get that how much you love your lady money.”

While preliminary assessments have people saying Tha Carter IV is missing the momentum that propelled its predecessors to instant classic status (which may or may not be his last album) it will no doubt be another home run in Weezy’s storied career.
