Gender-Bender Australian Male Model Andrej Pejic Is Hotter Than You!
From the moment they laid eyes on his beautiful bone structure, gorgeous blue eyes, striking platinum blonde hair and rose petal pink tinged lips, the fashion industry wanted to know one thing: “Who’s the blonde girl?”
That blonde girl is 20-year-old Serbian Australian male model Andrej Pejic. Known for his fierce androgyny, Andrej has been in high-demand ever since he burst on the scene at the Paris men’s runway shows in June 2010 and caught the eye of photographers Steven Meisel, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott along with designers John Galliano and Paul Smith. The “gender-bender supernova” as he likes to call himself, is blurring the lines of what it means to be masculine and feminine even more walking in the men’s and women’s shows for Jean-Paul Gaultier and as the face of print campaigns for Marc Jacobs.
“I guess professionally I’ve left my gender open to artistic interpretation,” Andrej says. “When I started experimenting, it was to make myself feel happy, to look in the mirror and be satisfied. I never did drag or anything like that. It was always that I wanted to be pretty, to look beautiful, as a girl would want to. It’s not like, ‘Okay, today I want to look like a man, or today I want to look like a woman. I want to look like me. It just so happens that some of the things I like are feminine.”
For a guy that admits he was discovered at 17-years-old whilst working at a fast food joint, Andrej doesn’t associate with pink or blue more than he likes the color green. “I don’t really have that sort of strong gender identity—I identify as what I am. The fact that people are using it for creative or marketing purposes, it’s just kind of like having a skill and using it to earn money.”
So what does Mr. Unisex feel when detractors say he should only have the option to choose between boxers and briefs and not lace panties? “My whole life is controversy,” laughs Andrej. “What can I do? I’m like Britney Spears!”
Clearly Britney Spears is one thing that needs no translation.
