Deadbeats Dad & Moms Lured With Football Tickets?

That seems to be the name of the game down in Alabama, where the police department developed “Operation: Iron Snare.” The gist of the whole operation centers around deadbeat parents who won’t pay their child support. The local authorities have obviously had enough of this type of behavior and thus have gotten creative and ingenious (as well as, quite embarrassing) with their approach to finding these folks. Basically, they make an offer the fellas can’t refuse: free tickets to the Iron Bowl.

Before we get ready to have a discussion about rewarding bad behavior or creating incentives for what people should do in the first place, realize that they do not give these guys tickets at all. Instead, they make them think they are getting tickets, and then arrest them for unpaid child support. To make matters worse, the whole thing is caught on tape To Catch A Predator style.

Is this cruel and unusual punishment? Better yet, what does it say about society that we have parents more willing to attend college football games than provide financial support for their children? Also, what if some of these guys have legitimate circumstances that render them unable to pay child support or this is a retaliation tactic used by the mother of the child? These things do happen, and Corey Holcomb would be upset if I didn’t acknowledge it.

Oh, and were you as surprised as I was that one of those arrested in the operation was a woman?
