A cute redhead in her early twenties is bringing the fun back to dubstep, drum ‘n’ bass, garage and funk more than any other U.K. artist since Craig David. Meet Katy B, whose 2011 Mercury Prize–nominated debut album Katy On A Mission releases in America today (it dropped in Britain in April).

Taking chances with the futuristic sound of her production in a way reminiscent of the late Aaliyah, Katy has had success with infectious singles such as “Broken Record” and “Easy Please Me” (below):

Katy On A Mission spans “the whole history of electronic culture in the UK,” Katy tells Billboard. “I remember when I first went to make an album I’d just turned 18, the legal clubbing age. I was going out left, right and center, to anything. It was all so inspiring. They had loads of different club nights. I was definitely getting influenced in all angles of my personality through the different genres.”

The singer’s first U.S. single is the album’s title track and while it’s yet to make an impact on local charts this will no doubt change when she tours the country at the end of the year.
