Blame it on Diddy. When the mogul decided it was in then-urban label Bad Boy Records‘ best interests to expand its roster and include young, multicultural pop acts like Dream and Danity Kane, he set the stage for others to follow suit.

Cash Money Records, synonymous for being one of the biggest rap labels in the South (and now the nation) has just signed its first pop group, a saccharine act called Savvy. The home of gritty stars like the Hot Boys and Mia X is now welcoming a wholesome singing and dancing quintet from Texas already known worldwide from their international TV comedy series The Wannabes (the show recently launched in the U.S. on the Starz Kids & Family network).

According to Billboard, co-CEO Ronald “Slim” Williams (pictured above) is all for diversifying the label:

“When we first started in New Orleans, we had a lot of rap artists,” Slim says. “But we always wanted to move into other genres. We are blown away by the range of talent in Savvy; they’re a special group. They work together and embody the hardworking spirit of the Cash Money family.

“We’re doing this for everyone,” he adds, recalling when he and Baby sat down with Lil Wayne to talk about the rapper’s visions for his career and beyond. “For us to continue to stay around, we have to expand,” he says, noting that Cash Money is about to sign another label in the near future.
