Troy Davis To Be Executed Without Hard Evidence He Committed The Crime
On September 21, 2011, Troy Davis will be executed in Georgia for a crime he allegedly committed back on August 19, 1989.
This is his fourth execution date.
The reason this trial is so significant is because of the lack of evidence provided to sentence Davis to death. This case has brought out everyone from former President Jimmy Carter to hip-hop artists including dead prez‘s M-1 who feel that carrying out this execution is a miscarriage of justice. The fact of the matter is, they are right.
Davis was convicted of killing off-duty police officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah, GA. There has been no DNA evidence linking Davis to the crime. The prosecution had nine witnesses who placed Davis at the scene of the crime, however, since the conviction, seven of those nine witnesses recanted their statements, many claiming police coercion. One of the witnesses, Sylvester “Redd” Coles, was originally a suspect who several people said boasted of killing MacPhail. The other witness is the only one who’s remained consistent. No murder weapon has ever been recovered.
On death row since 1991, Davis has maintained his innocence and claims he was falsely accused of the murder.
For the fourth time in four years, Davis has been given an execution date. Amnesty groups, celebrities, politicians and activists have taken up Davis’ cause. While some of you may say there is a chance Davis did commit the crime—it’s possible. But the mere thought that an innocent man will be executed is sickening.
Once again, something is wrong with our judicial system when it can put someone on death row and keep him there with a lack of evidence linking him to the crime. It’s not like Davis was an individual with prior convictions thus leading a jury to believe he could be a cop killer. He plead guilty to carrying a concealed weapon in 1988 but that alone does not a cold-hearted murderer make.
The case is far from ironclad but the state of Georgia wanted someone to pay for this crime. Unfortunately, Davis is that someone.
Sadly, this may be Davis last chance.

As for Troy Davis, if he did it, he did and should be punished but if not I hope he make it out of this and release him do to lack of evidence.
