.XXX Web Addresses Go On Sale

Web addresses with the newly-approved .xxx domain went on sale on Wednesday, but not to the kinds of companies you’re thinking of. The ICM Registry, the company that hands out domain names, has made .xxx Web addresses available only to non-pornography companies who want to claim their trademarked brands until October 28th.

The .xxx domains are intended to create a virtual “red light” district, making it easier to identify adult content and block it from children. But the ease of identifying adult content also has obvious benefits for pornography companies.

“The truth is, no one is going to be going to coca-cola.xxx,” explained CEO Stuart Lawley, giving Coca-Cola some questionable free publicity, “but some may not want their brands associated [with .xxx domains] in any way.”

Companies will have to pay a one-time fee of $200-300 to reserve the domain and keep it from “cyber-squatters” hoping to capitalize of a well-known name. Celebrities and politicians were removed from the registry for free, as were thousands of names requested by governments and child protection agencies. According to Lawley, you won’t see AngelinaJolie.xxx. or even less-likely sites named after British prime ministers, and a general policy prohibits registering someone else’s name.

Adult entertainment companies are supposed to have 17 exclusive days after October 28th to register remaining .xxx domains; but UK newspaper The Guardian is reporting that 15,000 domains have already been given to 35 porn companies, and some may go live before the official Dec. 6 launch.

After this grace period, the domains will open up to the general public. So I guess a lot of average people are interested in having a .xxx site of their own?
