Should Sarah Palin’s Sexual History With Glen Rice Matter So Much To So Many People?

So, you’ve heard the news, right? Sarah Palin allegedly slept with former college basketball and NBA star Glen Rice. Almost 25 years ago, Palin was covering a basketball tournament called the Great Alaska Shootout for a local TV station when she met Rice and, according to a new book, The Rogue: Searching For The Real Sarah Palin, she slept with him. It was a one-night stand and she presumably never heard from or talked to Rice again. And yet, people seem to be really upset or outraged or intrigued or something about the news that this happened. As a result, it’s been covered endlessly for almost a week now.

My question: Why in the world are so many people interested in learning the intimate details of Palin’s alleged one-night stand with Glen Rice? If it happened, it happened. But judging by the blog comments I’ve read, there’s a certain segment of people out there who are shocked that Palin slept with a black man. And there are another group of people who are jumping all over Palin simply because she’s been pretty judgmental of others in the past, so they want to cast judgment of her for having a one-night stand with a popular athlete. But, at the end of the day, does Palin’s sexual history with Rice really matter as much as some people are making it seem?

More importantly, why aren’t we more upset about some of the other things that are being leaked from the book? Namely, the part that alleges that Palin had an affair with her husband’s business partner. As opposed to the Rice story, that’s something that people should actually be upset about if it really happened. But rather than investigate that further, people are stuck on the Rice story and making jokes about it on Twitter at will.

I’m just as guilty as a lot of you out there. When the Palin/Rice story first broke, I immediately posted a story about it and watched it get a large amount of traffic because of the scandalous nature of the story. Sarah Palin and Glen Rice?! It’s an incredibly ridiculous and random story that deserves a lot of the attention that it got. However, I’m surprised at how many people have lost their minds over this story and completely discarded Palin as a person and a politician because of it. As if her involvement with a college basketball player almost 25 years ago has any bearing on who she is today.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m no fan of Sarah Palin. I think that a lot of the things that she says and does don’t make a whole lot of sense. I also will go on the record as saying that I will never vote Palin for President. However, enough is enough with the Palin/Rice jokes. When The Rogue drops this week, I hope we can all move on to the next outrageous part of the book. Because while it was fun to poke fun at the fact that Palin and Rice had a fling back when they were young adults, I don’t think we should all care this much about it.

So, yeah. Sarah Palin allegedly slept with former college basketball and NBA star Glen Rice. And? It’s time to get over it.
