Over the weekend Justin Bieber proved he’s one smooth operator. The teenage sensation surprised girlfriend Selena Gomez, 19, with an intimate dinner and movie for two at an otherwise empty Staples Center—yes, the massive sporting arena.

Justin and Selena attended mutual friend Demi Lovato‘s concert on Friday night in downtown Los Angeles at the nearby Nokia Theater. TMZ reports after the show, just after 11pm, Justin instructed Selena, “Follow me,” and took her through the underground tunnel that connects Nokia to Staples. When they walked inside the empty 20,000 seat arena, the lights had been dimmed and there was a candlelit table for two on the floor.

The Lexus Club, the venue’s upper-crust restaurant, reportedly catered the meal, which consisted of steak and pasta. And when the couple were finished eating, Titanic appeared on the jumbo screens above them.

The Biebs apparently got the idea from the movie Mr. Deeds, where Adam Sandler surprises Winona Ryder with a date at Madison Square Garden. Selena was apparently “shocked” when she walked into the arena and as for Justin, he didn’t have to pay a penny for any of it—the honchos at Staples were grateful he’d filled the arena three times in the past and gave him the night as a gift.
