The newest commercial for PEPSI is the stuff of legends. Instead of banking on a rising star that is here today but may be gone tomorrow, the soft drink giant delved into their vault of vintage footage, to create a nostalgic commercial reinforcing the notion that Pepsi is a classic.

Featuring pop royalty, singers Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey and rapper Kanye West, the star-studded commercial weaves snippets from past spots into one stellar commercial called the “Music Icons.” Debuting during The X Factor, the commercial spotlights each performer during their greatest moments. Ray tickles the ivories as a bevy of beauties dance behind him, Kanye creates his own world, Mariah is in full diva mode while setting off fireworks in the distance, Britney throws an expertly choreographed rooftop party to “The Joy of Pepsi” and Michael tips his fedora while hot-stepping in sequined socks and penny loafers. The spot ends with the slogan “Where there’s Pepsi, there’s music,” and asks, “Who’s next?”

The X Factor hopes to answer that question. This year the winner of the reality competition will not only win a contract worth $5 million, virtually unheard of in the music industry, but when the show ends in December, the last man or woman standing will star in their very own commercial to air during the Super Bowl on February 5, 2015.
