Why Is Everybody So Disappointed About The Release Of The Apple iPhone 4S?
Attention, Apple fan boys: There will not be an iPhone 5 this year and the iPhone 4S announced by Apple yesterday is a huge disappointment…
But, you already knew that. By now, you’ve blogged about it, tweeted about it, sent out a few texts about it, and bombarded the message boards with it. Well, guess what? It’s time to get over it.
Unlike past iPhone releases, yesterday’s announcement in Cupertino, CA didn’t come with all of the bells and whistles that people were expecting. Apple didn’t deliver an iPhone 5. They didn’t come with any major changes for the new iPhone 4S, save for a pretty cool voice recognition system. And they didn’t deliver an event that lived up to all of the hype that was generated in the weeks leading up to the event. So, Apple clearly failed, right?
Eh, maybe. But, at the same time, I think that the negative reaction to the event Apple held yesterday shows that some fans of the company are starting to get spoiled. Over the course of the last two years, there have been some really BIG announcements by Apple, ranging from the initial release of the iPad to the release of the iPhone 4. Those announcements have featured big changes and the devices that have come out of them have really gotten Apple fan boys excited. But, this release of the iPhone 4S? Well, it’s more or less an attempt to get people excited about Sprint‘s new partnership with Apple and a stopgap between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, much like the iPhone 3GS was a stopgap between the iPhone 3 and iPhone 4. And, let me be the first person to say it: THAT’S OKAY.
I’ve enjoyed all of the new technology that Apple has released recently just as much as the next guy who loves tech. But, I also have to admit that if I have to shell out one more penny for a new Apple product, I’m going to lose it. Apple has been releasing so many new items recently that I’m actually glad that they didn’t drop the iPhone 5 yesterday. It’s been less than a year since I grabbed the iPhone 4 for Verizon and I’m still more than happy with it, so I’m glad they’re giving me a little bit more time to enjoy it before they drop another iPhone that I just have to have. Others are still buying the iPhone 4 now, too, so why should Apple rush out another iPhone just to make a few tech geeks happy?
I think we’re all getting just a little bit spoiled here. I understand that Apple is losing precious ground in the race for smart phone supremacy against Android. I also understand that they’ve clearly got a million and one new developments that they could have pieced together in order to create the iPhone 5 so they could release it this fall. However, I’m okay with waiting a few more months to get my hands on one if it means that they’ll put out a product that I’ll truly be excited about.
I wish other people would see things the same way. If you’re not happy with the new iPhone 4S, fine. Don’t buy it. It looks almost exactly like the iPhone 4 and it doesn’t have too many features that the iPhone 4 doesn’t already have. Wait it out and buy an iPhone 5 when Apple drops it next year. If anything, the disappointment expressed by Apple fan boys yesterday should force Apple to go that much harder to make the iPhone 5 great.
But, please: Don’t complain. It’s not the end of the world. The iPhone 5 will drop soon enough and all will be right in your life again. But, for now, keep plugging away with your iPhone 4. We promise you won’t be disappointed for long.
