Who Would Play Master Chief in Spielberg’s Halo Movie?

A French press release has reignited rumors that Steven Spielberg will direct an upcoming film based on the massively popular Halo video game franchise. This is great news for fanboys tired of video game adaptations being strictly B-movie fare.

Lord of the Rings maven Peter Jackson had long planned to make a Halo adaptation with director Neill Blomkamp. They postponed the project indefinitely due to lack of funds, but their collaboration became District 9, a pretty amazing and complex alien/shooter film.

Just a few problems with the most recent rumors: They’re pretty flimsy on proof. The news comes from an announcement for a Halo novel, and cites no sources. Tacked on at the end are just two sentences about an expected movie:

A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.

While this is certainly no cause for all the unsubstantiated speculation, we’d like to engage in some unsubstantiated speculation. If there is a film and Spielberg is involved, which of his favorite leading men could star as the cybernetically-enhanced supersoldier, Master Chief?

Tom Hanks (Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal): The Nicest Man In Hollywood as a near-silent space Marine? Nope.

Leonardo DiCaprio (Catch Me If You Can): Leo could certainly bring intensity and a mean glare. But I think all of DiCaprio’s characters have to be questionably insane, in a dream world, and/or have Mommy issues. So that could interfere with killing aliens.

Tom Cruise (Minority Report, War of the Worlds): Maybe. Cruise is getting a little old to pull off heavy action, and the notoriously short actor might not quite fill out Master Chief’s 6’7″ body armor. But we know he can still kick ass; and as a bonus, I think the Halo backstory sounds a lot like Scientology beliefs.

Eric Bana (Munich): Yes.

Look you dont need these characters in hollywood, there all for show and looks. The Mastercheif is always in his MJOLNIR 5 suit. All you need is a 7 foot, masculine, atheltic man in Masterchief’s suit, and have Steve Downs (masterchief’s voice) voice over, Thats not hard at all, its getting the rich story of the Halo Universe just right with all characters acting the way they should, everything looking feeling sounding just like the games. I’m sure if it’s anyone to pull of the most anticapted film of all time, it would be Steven Spielberg. And ofcourse Microsoft’s rich wallet. I hope they create a Halo film, all the Live actions for the games are just phenonemal and proves a Halo movie would work. And 2012 to launch side by side with Halo 4 would be enormous in popularity and cash, so fingers crossed it gets released 2012.
