Should Porn Star Sasha Grey Be Allowed To Read To Children?

Once upon a time, Sasha Grey was an award-winning porn star who once won “Best Oral Sex Scene” at the AVN Awards for her role in Throat: A Cautionary Tale. Nowadays she’s dedicated to educating children through the “Read Across America” program and last week she sat with first and third graders at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, CA.

As soon as TMZ broke the story, people were up in arms that a former porn star (she’s been out of the industry for two years now) would be allowed to “educate” children, with the school in question receiving numerous complaints.

In response to the uproar, Sasha released an official statement:

“I am proud to have participated in the ‘Read Across America’ program at Emerson Elementary School in Compton, CA. I read “Dog Breath” by Dav Pilkey to the sweetest 1st and 3rd grade children.

‘Read Across America’ is a program that was designed to promote literacy and instill a lifelong love of reading in elementary school students. Promoting education is an effort that is close to my heart. Illiteracy contributes to poverty; encouraging children to pick up a book is fundamental. I believe education is a universal right. I committed to this program with the understanding that people would have their own opinions about what I have done, who I am and what I represent.

I am an actor. I am an artist. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a partner. I have a past that some people may not agree with, but it does not define who I am. I will not live in fear of it. To challenge non-profit education programs is an exercise in futility, counter-productive and anti-educational.

I cannot thank my fans and ‘Read Across America’ enough for supporting my decision. Your support and kind words continue to inspire me. I believe in the future of our children, and I will remain an active supporter and participant in education-focused initiatives.”

Compton’s Unified School District (who first denied Sasha even spoke to students until TMZ unearthed a picture) are now saying they booked the actress due to her role in HBO’s Entourage and were unaware of her sordid past, even going so far to say they’ll never make the mistake of having “controversial figures” involved in their programs again.

Should Sasha be on the receiving end (no pun intended) of such scrutiny and backlash (once again, no pun intended) when it comes to her participation in such an admirable cause? As basic as this may sound, do first and third graders know or care who’s reading to them? People are given second chances in their careers and lives all the time; should Sasha be any different?
