New Film Alert: 21 Jump Street

So Hollywood is officially still in remake or film adaptation of  classic TV series mode and nothing is safe. This time, 21 Jump Street is getting a Hollywood overhaul. Just in case some readers are too young to remember, 21 Jump Street was a crime show about a task force of young police officers who would pass for high schoolers or college students and fight crime on those fronts.

Basically, this is a movie that takes Nick Cannon‘s Underclassman to the extreme. You can expect to see some awkward funny moments in this one, as the script was largely written by Hollywood funnyman Jonah Hill, who also serves as the film’s co-star. He and Channing Tatum are teaming up to take this one over the top. The film also features veteran comedian Deray Davis, a supporting role by renaissance man Ice Cube, and a slew of cameo appearances by original cast members such as Holly Robinson Peete.

Honestly, from the trailer below, it looks like a standard teen flick about high school.

It probably won’t do too bad at the box office, but we’re looking for some originality. Can we get a good film that isn’t based on a TV show, an older film, or a book?

Seriously, what’s next? Good Times starring Mehcad Brooks and Kevin Hart?

21 Jump Street will be released to theaters March 2012.
