Mayor Michael Bloomberg Calls NYPD “My Own Army”
NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg might have updated the famous saying of absolute monarchs, “L’etat, c’est moi- The State is me.”
According to PolitickerNY, Bloomberg was giving a talk at MIT and responding to speculation that he will run for president, saying that he already has plenty of responsibility as mayor:
“I have my own army in the NYPD, which is the seventh biggest army in the world. I have my own State Department, much to Foggy Bottom’s annoyance. We have the United Nations in New York, and so we have an entree into the diplomatic world that Washington does not have,” Mayor Bloomberg said.
Bloomberg has enjoyed high approval ratings during almost all of his tenure, and many New Yorkers agree that he gets things done (no small accomplishment in the city’s byzantine bureaucracy). But the one criticism that has stuck is that he forgets that he’s not, in fact, King of the City. (OK, as the 12th Richest Person in America, maybe he actually is, but is supposed to wear the title more modestly.) Even some supporters were angry when, in 2008, he successfully lobbied to extend term limits so he could run again.
The comment had especially bad timing, coming just weeks after the media mogul imposed a media blackout while his “army” evicted protestors from Zuccotti Park.
The mayor was supposedly denying that he will run for higher office, and yet his comments became curiously specific:
“Unfortunately, people at the federal level or the state level typically spend their whole lives in politics, and they’ve never been an executive and it shows,” Mayor Bloomberg said.
Hm, if only there were a politician who had been wildly successful in government and business…
In honor of Hizzoner’s recent comments, I’ve created a few other examples of things that Bloomberg might think are his. Please visit “My Own Bloomberg” at quickmeme.com to create your own, or leave ideas in the Comments section below.
