The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey– First Trailer!

Nerds rejoice! After years of legal disputes and delays, Peter Jackson‘s big screen adaptation of The Hobbit released its first trailer this week. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is just part one, with the second film (There And Back Again) filming simultaneously in New Zealand.

Aside from finally bringing to life another of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s Middle Earth classics, the films will also act as a prequel to Jackson’s massively successful Lord of the Rings trilogy. Numerous cast members are returning, including Elijah Wood, Ian Holm, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Christopher Lee, and Ian McKellen as Gandalf.

Among the newcomers, Martin Freeman seems especially well-cast as young Bilbo, considering his extensive experience  playing likable everymen thrust into bizarre situations in projects like The Hithchiker’s Guide To The Galaxy and the UK version of The Office. While Frodo and Samwise were at the center of LOTR, Bilbo steps into the spotlight here for his own journey.

Perhaps equally important, composer Howard Shore returns to score the Hobbit films. Would those helicopter shots of Middle Earth be the same without his swelling music?

The film is set to be released in December 2012. What do you think of this first peek?
