The scariest horror film this author has ever seen, bar none, is 1973′s The Exorcist. Since then, many different films have tried (and failed miserably) to recreate the terror, dread, and fantastical stylings of that film. The next movie to follow in that legacy is 2012′s The Devil Inside.

Unlike the other exorcism films, the premise is not just another case of short-term demon possession. In this film, the subject was possessed over 20 years ago and killed three people during an exorcism performed on her. Still possessed, her daughter is shooting a documentary to try to figure out how/why her mother was possessed and if she is in danger as well.

Sounds original enough, right? Here’s the trailer.

It is unlikely that any similar movie will ever upstage The Exorcist, but by the looks of things, this one will come the closest.

The Devil Inside will debut in theaters everywhere January 6, 2012.
